A lot of people out there think that to meet people professionally, you have to go to networking events or other “professinal” settings.  And when you do go to those “professional” settings, you should have your business cards in hand and ask everyone what they do.

One of the biggest ways to get yourself in deep poop is to screw up your relationships–business or personal.   Bu why don’t we get through one problem at a time.

One big problem for professionals is figuring out how to make new relationships.   And they say that success in business is all about relationships.

So, how do you start a professional relationship the right way?

To answer these questions and more, I interviewed connection-expert Steve “The Ripple Man” Harper.   The interview went on for over an hour, but I cut out the fluff with my trusty sound editing software.  I’ll air clips of this interview through this week and next. You’ll get 5-7 minute connection “bullets.

The first of these interviews covers the difference between networking and connecting.  When most professionals go out there to meet other professionals, they “network.”  As a professional, I was always uncomfortable with the whole idea of “networking” until I came upon Harper’s book, The Ripple Effect.   One thing Harper talks a lot about is rather than networking, we should be making “connections.”  But rather than have me explain the difference, here it is in Harper’s own words.
