Some people are just plain sick of their jobs. The only problem is they don’t have the guts to just quit. Instead, they just sit around waiting to be fired.

But you can’t just sit around and wait to get fired! You’ve got to DO something about it. Some people think you have to do something drastic like that flight attendant sliding guy. But those tactics are for quitters. You’re not a quitter.

You wanna get fired! There are lots of things you can do to get fired that go beyond the obvious things like yelling at your boss. Let’s look at some:

1. Show up late

This is a good way to put yourself on the chopping block. Coming in late tells your boss that you don’t respect his time or yours. In fact, you’re telling him that you don’t take your job seriously.

Oh, be sure NEVER to make an excuse for being late. just shrug your shoulders when you’re asked why you’re late.

2. Take long lunches (and have a couple of drinks while you’re at it)

Oh, the lunch break. We love to eat our lunches. But if you want to get fired, you’ll need to REALLY enjoy your lunch. Take a couple of hours or so. And have a couple of drinks. I recommend tequila shots.

There’s nothing a boss will love more than the smell of alcohol on your breath.

Oh, and if your boss asks why you’re late from lunch or why you reek of booze–just shrug your shoulders.

3. Leave early

The last part of the “time” trilogy is simple. Leave early. If your boss asks why you’re leaving early–just shrug your shoulders.

4. Complain about things your boss has no control over

This may not get your fired immediately, but it will put your name at the top of the chopping list. Complain about the weather, lousy benefits, state of the economy, etc. You know your boss can’t solve these problems in a day, but don’t let that stop you.

Oh…don’t offer any solutions to any problems. If you do that, this may backfire on you and instead of getting fired, you’ll end up with a promotion.

5. Say that everything is “not your job”

Getting fired requires you to re-define your job. Find some “core job” that you do and consider it your ONLY job For example, if you answer the phones, make reports, AND sell insurance. Think that all you do is sell insurance. Let the reports go unfiled and let that phone ring and ring.

If the boss complains, explain that your ONLY job is to sell insurance–not answer a damn phone. As an added bonus, tell your boss to do it.

Do these enough and you’re sure to get fired. And the best part is YOU get to be the victim. Because, hey, you were “doing your job” after all.

One caveat: if you’ve got it in your head that you are going to start your own business after getting fired, think again. If you can’t be anywhere on time or do things outside your “job description” you’ll have a helluva time doing it for your own business. And if you think your attitude will change just because it’s your business, you’re wrong. The same people who complain about their bosses all day are the same people who complain about their clients all day Maybe, it;s a genetic thing. We don’t know. But DSP is planning to hire a geneticist to run experiments on it.

I’ve read a lot of self-help and business books. Now, I’m thinking about writing one. I’ve already shown you how to write one, so isn’t it time that I step up to the plate?

I figure I don’t need to say anything substantial. I can just take one idea and repeat it over and over again. It should be enough to fill up a whole book, especially if I cheese it.

I mean people think that if I give them ONE good idea, then a book is worth buying. Well, by that ridiculously low standard, I can pull it off with no problem.

The problem is the title. I just can’t think of a good title. I figure the title will sell my new book more than anything.

So what should I do?

I am thinking of giving it some “trendy” and provocative title that makes me sound hip and cool and edgy, like ones I mentioned before:

Same is the new different

Slow is the new fast

Drunk is the new sober

Beginning game is the new end game

Polka Dot Daffodils

Then again I could go with BOLD PROCLAMATIN title:

The Death of Self-help

The Coming Greatest Depression of ALL TIME

How Humankind will be Wiped Out in 2013: And How You can Prevent it

The Collapse of the Corporate America and the Rise of the Mini-corporation

Of course, there are a ton of the one word/one-syllable book titles out there. So, I could follow in that tradition:

Bump

Grind

Lock

Drive

Stop

Push

Shove

Budge

Masses

Herds

Turds

Or I could go with the tried and true number title combined with a “money” word like success or wealth:

7 Ways to Be Successful NOW

5 Habits of Wealthy Superstars

9 Steps to Wealth

101 Ways to Enrich Yourself with Unlimited Wealth

Then again, I could go with a combination of them:

Push: 7 Ways to be successful NOW!

Drive: 5 Habits of Wealthy Superstars

Polka Dot Daffodils: How Humankind will be Wiped Out in 2013: And How You can Prevent it!

Man, this is too much..I think I’ll just go with the title that came to me first:

THIS BOOK SUCKS (But Buy it Anyway)!Similar Posts:

I read a book a while back called, “Shop Class as Soulcraft” by Matthew Crawford. In that book, Crawford set about redefining the concept of “work.” But the main thing I got out of the book was that our society sees “manual work” as somehow less-than “intellectual work”.

But Crawford argued that most “intellectual work” is actually NOT intellectually stimulating. Whereas, “maual work” like fixing a motorcycle is. The reason, Crawford argues is that you can see the results of your work.

Interesting. I recommend the book in general but found it rather long. You can read the original article that spawned the book here.

But why am I bringing this up?

I do think there is a war on work. With a rough economy and outsourcing the norm, why is blue collar work seen as “beneath”? I certainly don’t think it is. Obviously, you can’t get rich doing “manual work”. Right?

WRONG! In fact, in the book The Millionaire Next Door, many of the millionaires in the book had jobs like:

welding contractors

auctioneers

rice farmers

owners of mobile-home parks

pest controllers

coin and stamp dealers

paving contractors

Hmmm…not what you imagined, was it?

I think a lot of the get-rich-quick crowd is being suckered by this attitude of thinking that manual work is not real work or work for suckers. Because the work seems “hard”, you won’t see a “wealth coach” tell some guy,

“Hey, buy a lawnmower, print up a bunch of flyers, and cut grass. Low investment, high return.”

Nope. They’ll tell them to align vibrations or some other crap. They basically give them a formula to avoid work that seems “hard”, unlike real millionaires that make plenty of money doing work that is “beneath” a lot of people.

The thing is there is value in work. And I agree that it’s time we start looking at work differently. Before Crawford’s book, I never thought of fixing a computer (which I can do) as intellectually stimulating. But I realized it really is. There’s the problem. Now, it’s fixed. Compare that to a marketing campaign I once createdthat I hoped was good but wouldn’t know the results until much later. Unlike my computer, where the results were instantaneous.

So, I think it’s about time that manual labor gets its due. And it’s time that people looking to earn a decent living snap out of the dream fantasy that being wealthy means being Donald Trump. Donald Trump is an entertainer. Most millionaires are not. And if you really want to know a “wealth secret” I’ll give you one for free:

Go do a job no one else wants to do.

In fact, stand outside one of those wealth secret seminars and offer to fix their cars or something. They’ll be so full of hot air from some guy telling them that doing manual work is not what “wealthy people” do that YOU’ll rake in THEIR cash while they sitting around aligning vibrations or developing the “wealth mindset”.

To conclude, I thought I’d add a video of a TED talk by Mike Rowe, the guy from “Dirty Jobs” where he talks about work. I found it interesting.

Similar Posts:

I know all of you out there dream of writing a bestselling business book. But there’s always ONE thing holding you back—business experience.

But fear not because I have discovered the secret to writing a bestselling business book.

Soon, you’ll be on all the talk shows.

The media will be begging for your advice.

You’ll be invited to the White House to give your advice on major policy decisions.

That’s right. You’ll be the most sought-after million-dollar business consultant after you write your bestseller. You’ll have so much cash that you’ll be able to buy your own frickin’ island!!!

And I can teach you how. I’ll take you step by step through the process of writing a bestselling business book. Oh, I won’t’ give you writing tips or insignificant details like that. No, not at all. I’m gonna tell you how to get people to fall all over themselves to BUY your book. It’s foolproof!

So, are you ready to become a bestselling business book author? Here’s how:

Step 1: Read some business books.

Step 2: Take an idea out of one of those business books. Take ONLY one because the ridiculously low standard for business books is that they only have to give you ONE good idea. If you go around putting 2 or 3 good ideas in there, you’ll only confuse the readers AND lose out on writing your next 2-3 books.

Step 3: Take that old idea and call it something else. If you like the idea of cutting unnecessary expenses to run a successful business, then call unnecessary expenses “blue elephants”. Do NOT give anyone a clue that it is an old idea. It is key that you be “innovative”.

Step 4: Take your new “innovative” idea and sit down to write your book.

Step 5: As you write, repeat your new idea over and over again. Say it in as many different ways as possible. For example, if an unnecessary expense is a “blue elephant”, you can talk about snagging blue elephants (identifying unnecessary expenses),training blue elephants (trimming unnecessary expenses), or burying blue elephants (eliminating the expenses altogether).

If you can, give the old idea 2-3 more innovative names. And always make sure to say how new your idea is.

Step 6: Make up stories to prove your point. Remember this is all about IDEAS, not about anything of substance. Ideas are cool. Facts and studies are boring as heck. Leave that to the academics. We don’t care about academics. We care about getting a yacht!

Step 7: Now that you’re done, publishers will be crawling at your door to get a hold of your latest book. Don’t worry. It’s easy. If you have any trouble, I have a $7,500 how-to-get-your-book-published seminar that guarantees that a publisher WILL LOOK at your next bestseller. Of course, that’s a drop in the bucket compared to all the money you’re going to make as a bestselling author.

Think it’s impossible. I thought you might. To show you how easy it is, I will show you how effortlessly simple it is to write a bestselling business book.

Below are the new books I am working on that are going to pay for my new fleet of Ferraris.

Same is the new different

Since everyone jumps on trends, you will be different if you just stay the same instead of trying to keep up with the business joneses.

Old idea: Stay true to your core values.

Slow is the new fast

Take your time and deliver quality products/services than fast and cheap. This is due to my non-existent research that tells me that people want this.

Old idea: don’t sell shoddy products or deliver crappy service

Green Forest Strategy

People are trying so hard to look for the newest trend that they forget what is right in front of them. The forest is green. Look for the green.

Old idea: Grab the low hanging fruit (a cliché I hate)

Polka Dot Daffodils

If you want to survive you have to stand out. So, you must strive to be like a polka dot daffodil.

Old idea: be different.

Those are just a few of my new books. And don’t even think about stealing these ideas. I’ve got a shark lawyer that loves to sue.

If you do need help repackaging old ideas and rebranding them as new and innovative ones, why don’t you come to my “Bestselling Idea RE-Creation Workshop”. For a mere $2,500, I will help you turn old ideas into brand new innovative ones. That coupled with my super cheap $7,500 how-to-get-your-book-published seminar will put you on the path to prosperity and wealth.

What are you waiting for? The time is now. Carpe diem.Similar Posts:

So, imagine my surprise to get this e-mail from him (probably typed by Ms. Ledbetter). Inspired by my recent job vs. business series, Lyle wanted to share business advice for current and prospective business owners. Since I happen to agree with this advice, I thought I’d put it on the blog. His advice is ruthless, but sometimes a little ruthlessness is what’s needed.

Feel free to commment and let’s hope we can get Lyle to respond to comments because he “doesn’t do that whole blogging thingamajig”.

Rules are Rules: Why You Should Never Do An Employee a Favor

When it comes to running a small business there are many roadblocks to face, but fear not…

I’ve got your back! Having been run through the wringer a time or two, I have learned things as many do, the hard way. Through it all it has taught me one of the most valuable lessons in business, and it is that the rules apply, to everyone and everything. So this is my journey….

I hope it helps you on yours.

“The Favor Effect”

I can’t tell you how many times over the years I have heard,

“Lyle… I need to ask you for a BIG favor”.

Translation : “Lyle, I really want the day off, and I want you to say it’s all right”.

This is what I call the “Favor Effect” and it can potentially destroy your business…

…but only if you let it!

Part of my background has been in the plant management of small production-based businesses, where it is important that everyone is at work every day. Typically the businesses were in cities with populations under 60k and had high turnover ratios to boot!

If you have ever run an enterprise in this type of environment then my message will probably hit home. If you are planning to start up a similar venture then this could very well save your life! So sit back and relax, because I am going to give you the bottom line and share with you some kick-ass ammo to “fight back the slack”!

How The Favor Effect Kills Employee Morale

Whenever you comply with an employee’s request or “favor”, that would normally go against policy, you are basically telling your entire staff “the rules don’t matter”.

Without order there is chaos, when that happens, you might as well fire everybody and start all over from scratch. I promise, if you do a favor for just one employee then it will be expected from everyone else five-fold. Thus creating the snowballing nightmare I like to call the “Favor effect”.

One of the problems is that employers think when they do a favor for an employee that it makes them a “nice guy”. Yes, typically when you do a favor for someone you are being good-natured, but when it comes to your business that’s just being plain stupid. Anytime you feed into this behavior you are setting yourself up for failure.

The negative side effects it can have on your business can really throw a monkey wrench in your daily operations. (see: absences, decreased performance, etc.) Most, if not all, end up contributing to poor employee retention.

That, my friends, is what will break you down in the end.

Listen, I used to be the “nice” guy at work who tried to help people out with their lives. I always thought that my generosity would be appreciated, and returned with loyalty. Until… I spent the first two years at a company eating crap-cakes for breakfast three times a week. I went through over forty people in under the two-year mark, and we only employed eleven–which included me!

I just had enough, and I knew if I didn’t start raining down thunder soon, things were going to get completely out of control. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all bad. You will find that some people stick by your side, and you will have some pretty good laughs along the way. That being said, it still does not substitute for the precious time I lost with my family because of other people’s problems.

The truth is I was to blame just as much as the people who were being irresponsible, because I simply could not bring myself to say the word “no”. As a boss, you must learn to trust in the word “no”.

My Personal Favorite Excuses for Not Coming in to Work

Speaking of the word “no”, I wanted to share with you some of the excuses or “favors” that I have heard over the years. Some are common, some might sound fictitious, but I can assure you they are 100% real. There have been many, but my personal favorites usually presented themselves in the form of a last minute call-in. I will share a few, and give you my “on the spot” response.

My baby daddy got arrested for back child support, and I need to get him out.

Lyle’s response: What for? Doesn’t that cat owe you child support? Every dollar counts, and I don’t think your children can afford for you to miss work.)

I’m sick, but my doctor isn’t seeing patients today. I’ll be back at work tomorrow though, I think I just need to sleep it off.

Lyle’s response: In that case, go to the emergency room and bring me a note when you’re done. If not, you need to come in to work.

I’ve got my period… and it’s bad.

Lyle’s response: Go to the store right now and buy some cranberry juice and midol. Make sure you take it before you get to work, because nobody wants to listen to you bitch all morning.)

I can’t come in because I don’t have a ride.

Lyle’s response: I freaking love this one! Next time someone tries to pull this one, you offer to pick them up. I bet you $2o within 30 seconds you’ll get more excuses than a porcupines’ got prickers. Whatever you do, try not to let yourself get poked (and you know where!).

Whatever the excuse is remember this: they are all attempts to transfer responsibility–to make their problems into your problems.

DON’T YOU DO IT! The valuable time you waste dealing with this BS could be spent on refining your business and improving your bottom line.Similar Posts:

Yesterday, I told you why having a job is better than having a business. Today, I’ll give you 5 reasons why having a business is better than having a job.

Disclaimer: When talking about having your own business, I am referring to a real business—not the fake get-rich-quick businesses. Also, I do not consider Amway or any MLM to be a business.

1. Unlimited experience

They say a business owner wears many hats. It’s true.

But when you work at a job, you tend to get pretty good at the one thing you do. But when you run a business, you acquire a whole new set of skills. In my case, I worked as a writer for one of my former companies. But when I started running my own company, I became the accountant, marketer, lead salesman, and whole lot more. I learned more in one year of running my own business than I did working 5 years at a company.

In fact, the marketing skills I developed while running my company gave me opportunities that are STILL paying dividends literally and figuratively. I never would have learned any of it if I had stayed an employee. There was no need to.

With a job your experience is limited. As a business owner, the sky’s the limit.

2. Your only limit is your ambition

When you own a business, you are only limited by your ambition. If your goal is to become fabulously rich, then you can grow your business to meet that goal. If you want to stay small to maximize your free time, then you can create a business to meet that goal.

A job simply does not let you do that. If you’re ambitious, you have to hope a boss likes you enough to give you a promotion. Sometimes the best office politician is the one who gets rewarded, not the most qualified.

If you want to limit your job to maximize free time, your boss will probably send you packing.

But if you have a business, you can make your business smaller to do this.

3. Make more money

It is true that the income of a job is steadier. But you can make more money having a business. A business gives you the greatest opportunity to make money.

If you work to grow your business, you could earn more money in one day than you did in a whole month working for a company. This was my experience and the business I was running was small by design.

Imagine if I REALLY wanted to grow it.

Another thing is that a business rewards your results. If you’re good at your business, you earn more money from your labors.

A job? You get paid to show up. And how many of you seethe that Joe Slacker makes about the same amount of money you do and does ¼ of the work?

When it’s your business, you can actually get paid what you’re worth.

4. Greater control over your own time

A business allows you to take greater control over your time.

This is one of the greatest benefit to having your own business—setting your own schedule. If you have kids, this is especially important.

Now, it’s not always possible to have any schedule. As I noted in an earlier post, you can be on-call 24 hours a day when you are an owner.

But you’re not working all 24 hours.

A job means 9-5 (or worse).

With my business, I would drop the kid off at school, go to the gym, and then run some errands. Shopping at 11AM is wonderful. No one’s there. I lived a beautiful off-peak life. Doing things while other people are working makes everyday tasks move faster. Hence, you save your valuable time. And if you have a business that allows you to work from home, you can even more advantage of your time. No commuting!

Go to the gym at 5:30 and see what happens. Go to the grocery store at 7:00PM. The crowds cut into your time.

A business gives you the greatest amount of control over your time because you can get things done while other people are working at their jobs.

5. You control your own destiny

If you value your freedom, then a business beats a job HANDS DOWN. A business gives you the opportunity to implement your vision. It gives you a chance to leave your mark on the world.

Are you socially conscious? Then you can start a business that follows your socially-conscious vision.

A job, on the other hand, means you have to implement someone else’s vision. And that vision might run in direct opposition to your values.

A saying that I once heard and completely agree with goes something like this: You can’t be more honest than your boss.

Let that sink in for a bit. I’ve worked for people that I thought were the most dishonest people in the world. I watched them lie to customers and lie to the higher-ups. These people gave the company a reputation for being dishonest.

When I saw this I thought to myself, if I were the boss I would fire that guy’s ass. But was he fired? Heck no. HE was the boss. And if I complained, I was shown where the door was. And not only was this boss dishonest, he was REWARDED for his dishonesty.

But when you have your own business, you CAN fire people who don’t follow your values. In fact, the greatest freedom you have is being able to hire whomever you want. Work with the people you want to work with.

Don’t like people that much? Start a business that has NO employees.

These are freedoms a job just does not offer.

And if you ask me, this is the #1 reason why your own business is better than having a job.

It’s not always about money. It’s about freedom and taking control of your own destiny.

A business gives you that freedom. A job doesn’t.

Conclusion

A business gives you the greatest opportunity to live life to its fullest. You get the chance to earn more money. But more than that, a business gives you the opportunity to live life ON YOUR TERMS. That kind of freedom is just not possible when you work for someone else.Similar Posts:

A lot of personal development gurus all agree on one thing: it’s better to own your own business than to have a job.

Huh?

Are they on something? I thought those guys all ran businesses. You think they’d know better.

Telling people that it’s always better to have your own business than to have a job is BAD advice pure and simple. That advice is condescending and insulting to those who find contentment in their jobs and irresponsible for those who do not have the means or the temperament to run a business.

Frankly, I’m sick and tired of these so-called personal development “gurus” making people feel bad and playing into their people’s insecurities about money. They give a big spiel about how bad it is “working for the man” and how you have to achieve ”freedom” (of course, they usually have a course on how to achieve the aforementioned freedom). And in doing so, they give people a romantic notion of having a business that does not square with reality.

Running your own business is not for everyone. Some people have the temperament to do it.

If you can do it, it can be a wonderful experience. But unlike those other gurus, I want you to go into it with both eyes open, not with rose-colored glasses on.

So, today I will 5 reasons why it’s better to have a job than running own your own business. Tomorrow, I’ll give you reasons why you should start your own business. Then, you can make your own decision if running a business is right for you—with eyes WIDE open.

Disclaimer: When talking about having your own business, I am referring to a real business—not the fake get-rich-quick businesses. Also, I do not consider Amway or any MLM to be a business.

1. A job is more secure

Security is the #1 reason people have jobs. Now, some personal development gurus will tell you there is no job security. And in this economy (as of this writing at least), it sounds like the right advice. I mean, you could get laid off at any time. But does that mean starting a business is that much more secure?

Sorry to be a party-pooper, but most new businesses go under within 2 years. Most people keep their jobs longer than 2 years.

In a direct comparison, a job provides WAY more security. Lose your job and you can find another one. Lose your business and you could lose your house (more on that later).

2. Jobs provide a steady income

If you cannot handle the income swings of having a business, then a job is way better. I ran a business for 6 years and the income was never steady. Some clients think payment is optional. Or they pay late. Or you have to sue them to get paid. Can you handle having NO income for months and then get a large lump sum?

If you are someone who does not have the temperament to handle financial insecurity, then having a job is right for you.

A big knock on earning income is people saying you’re a wage slave. I’ve seen this at a lot of personal development groups and forums (and pro-Amway web sites). And the funny thing about this is that using the term wage slave to talk about people who earn income through labor goes back a long way—all the way back to slave-owning societies.

In the slave-owning South before the American Civil War., Southerners used to argue the whole “wage slave argument” for keeping the institution of slavery “Heck, our slaves are better off than dem wage slaves up North. It’s the same darn thing.”

But what did REAL slaves think about getting a job? Fredrick Douglass (real slave, found in most history books) was elated at taking a job that paid him a wage for his labors.

And as someone who’s had employees before, let me just say that I wish I could have done without them. I depended on them as much as they depended on me. I wish I had known they were my “slaves” back then

3.Work Less Hours

Yep. I bet those personal development gurus never told you that you’ll work less hours at a job than with your own business, did they? Nope. They tell you how they work a few hours a week and rake in the cash.

“I just sit back and watch the money flow in.”

But brothers and sisters, here’s the honest poop: if you have a business, you work ALL the time. You are on call 24 hours a day when you run a business. Yeah, you may set your own hours, as long as you set them to 24 hours a day.

Your boss call you at home a lot? Well, your clients have NO PROBLEM calling you at home. And honestly, in the beginning, you cannot afford to have them NOT call you at home.

A joke all business owners like to tell is: you’ll work 80 hours a week just for the privilege of not working 40 hours for someone else. But it’s not a joke… it’s true.

4. Fewer Headaches

You think it’s bad working for one boss? Imagine that you have 20 bosses. Try 100. Try 1,000. Well, your clients are your bosses and they tell you exactly what to do. Sure you can choose whom you can work with, but really, how many clients do you think you will turn down when they pay? Be your own boss? Baloney.

The self-help “employment is bad” gurus tell you that you can just choose different clients. It’s true. Once you’ve established your business, you can work with better clients. But it takes time. And wit hthe aforementioned cash flow problem, you may not have much choice.

The world doesn’t always work like that. And we all know it.

Let me hammer this in your head: you always work for someone—whether it’s clients, customers or the government—you DO work for someone. And then there is this worst boss ever you’ll ever have to deal with —YOU, Yourself!!!

5. You Can’t Lose Your House When You Lose Your Job

Some personal development gurus tell you having a job is sooo risky.

What the hell are they smoking!

Let’s see, how do you get money to start that business? Either you take it from your savings or borrow it.

So, if your business goes under (most do), you wither lose your savings or default on a big loan.

You ever lose your life savings by losing a job?

You take a much bigger financial risk when you start a business than having a job.

Anyone who tells you any different is trying to sell you a get-rich-quick product.

Conclusion

Now, let me sum this up in plain English. That whole spiel about “working for the man” and making the owner rich doesn’t mean squat. All that does is make you feel bad about yourself and plays into your insecurities. You should choose to do what YOU want to do as it relates to YOUR goals. Why should you resent the fact that others are benefitting from your efforts? Is it such a bad thing that you are helping others achieve their goals? If so, that’s not personal development…it’s just sour grapes.
