THe truth is most lottery winners do just fine. Many stories I read that perpetuate the “lottery winners go broke” myth tend to mention the same people over and over again. I think if it were so common, they’d use statistics to back up the claims. They never do.

But, yes, at the same time there are people who wasted their lottery earnings. But I think it’s a similar thing that happens whenever people inherit a large sum of money at once. for more info, read my post on why getting rich quick sucks.

Actually there’s truth to lotto winners going broke after a ridiculous spending spree. Maybe it’s just a case that they’re in the hyped minority though (and helped the majority to be more sensible with their winnings).

I guess it goes to show you: make up financial advice and it's bound to be true somewhere. Actually, real estate IS tricky because investment strategies differ depending on where you're at. I'm glad to hear my advice of “Don't pay for your house; make your house pay for you” is working for Aussies.

You are going to let me take credit for that whenever I go on an Australian tour, aren't you?

In Australia, we have negative gearing, which means that it is actually quite sensible to purchase a property, have someone rent it and you, the landlord, rent a cheaper place. So this for us is a great piece of advice. I'm doing that at the moment and it is working really well.
